SERU test questions: types, topics and examples
Here is what SERU style questions look like, which topics they come from, and how to learn from the ones you get wrong. The examples are our own, not real exam questions.
Quick facts
- Question types (TfL): multiple choice and sentence completion
- Source (TfL): the PHV Driver's Handbook, ten sections
- Our practice bank: 300 questions (36 free, 264 in the full course)
- Real questions are not published by TfL
Question types
TfL says the assessment uses multiple choice questions and sentence completion. We practise three kinds, so you can see which one costs you marks:
- Rules: a question about a licensing, vehicle or passenger rule, with four options.
- Sentence completion: a sentence with a missing word. You choose the word that fits.
- Reading: a short passage, then questions about it.
The ten topics
The handbook, and so the questions, cover: driver licensing, PHV requirements, PHV journeys, staying safe, driver behaviour, parking in London, safer driving, equality and disability, safeguarding, and ridesharing. Learn all ten. Licensing, journeys and parking are big topics in our bank.
Two worked examples
Rules. What is the minimum age at which a person can apply for a London PHV driver's licence?
A) 18 B) 23 C) 21 D) 25
Answer: C. The handbook says an applicant must be aged 21 or older when applying. There is no upper age limit.
Sentence completion. A London PHV driver's licence normally lasts for ____ years.
A) one B) three C) five D) ten
Answer: B. The handbook says the licence normally lasts three years.
Both answers come from handbook section 1. Always check the current handbook: TfL can change rules.
How to learn from wrong answers
- Find the paragraph. Open the handbook at the section named in the explanation.
- Say the rule in your own words. If you cannot, read it again.
- Try again later. Wait a day, then three days, then a week. This is what the error queue in our full course does for you.

Common questions
What kinds of questions are in the SERU test?
TfL says the assessment uses multiple choice questions and sentence completion, where you add missing words. The questions are based on the PHV Driver's Handbook.
Are these the real SERU questions?
No. They are our own examples, written from the public handbook. TfL does not publish its real questions and we do not have them.
How many practice questions does the course have?
There are 300 in total: 36 in the free practice test and 264 more in the full course, all with an answer and a source in the handbook. Explanations are in the full course.
What should I do when I get a question wrong?
Find the paragraph in the handbook that gives the answer. Then try the question again a few days later. In the full course, missed questions return after 1, 3 and 7 days.
